Oso Dam was built on Oso River, a part of Ono River river system, as a new agricultural water source. Aso Shrine is the parent shrine of Otomiya Shrine. Otomiya Shrine houses Ubusuna, the god protecting the people of Ubuyama region. Katamata Aso Jinja (Shrine)

According to a shrine document stored in Aso Shrine, “while it is uncertain when it became a sacred shrine, when the grandson of Aso Okami was born, the dipper used at his first bath was enshrined here, and it became the village shrine in 1872.” Near the local walkway by the front of the shrine, there are old stone steps in the forest. The villagers climbed these steep steps to worship at the shrine.

Ubuyama is located in the central Kyushu, and it is surrounded by Mount Aso, world’s largest caldera, and Kuju volcanic mountain range, also known as the roof of Kyushu, and Mount Sobo.

About Ubuyama
A village blessed with bounties of nature, where water and greenery are made.
Ubuyama, surrounded by the northern rim of Mount Aso and Kuju mountains, has a vast grassland, deep-green forest, and limpid streams, and is decorated with mysterious flowers of Echinops setifer, which are filled with ancient romanticism. Moreover, a 360-degree, panoramic view of Kyushu’s famous 3 mountains: Aso, Kuju, and Sobo, is visible in the highlands. It rarely goes over 30℃even in summer, and you can experience an amazing scenery and fresh air with your entire body. It offers healing and relaxing time, not available in the city, with seasonally-changing views, experiences at the farm, and fresh water from the natural springs.

Higotai, a mysterious flower filled with ancient romanticism.
Higotai (Echinops) is a sky-blue, sphere-shaped flower, designated as the “village flower” of Ubuyama. It is a perennial flower in the Astraceae family that blooms between August and October. It is a symbolic flower of Aso, rarely seen in other regions of Japan. People frequently pick this beautiful flower, which has significantly reduced them in the wild. It has various other names including Ruri Higobachi.
